TV’s anniversary, but not always the preferred way to watch ‘content’

On the day that a survey reveals that young children now spend more time watching programmes on mobile devices than they do ‘watching the box’, today’s Google Doodle points out that television was first demonstrated by John Logie Baird 90 years ago today.

The demonstration, held in what was said to be an attic room in Frith Street in London’s Soho, was not without its dangers.

Logie Baird initially adopted a mechanical scanning approach to creating the images for transmission. The device featured a rotating disk with glass elements. Contemporary reports talk of bits of glass flying across the room – which could only hold six people at a time – as well as someone’s beard getting an unscheduled trimming.

While tablets and the like are becoming the preferred means of watching TV, interest in the ‘box’ remains high. The recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas featured TVs of all sizes, shapes and technologies.
