Market 'far from saturated' says Eben Upton

Last year, I wrote about the increasing popularity of low cost development platforms and how such devices seemed to be appearing with the legendary frequency of the London bus.

Although platforms such as Arduino and Beagle Board had been launched earlier, it was the Raspberry Pi which caught the world's attention. When Raspberry Pi first appeared, websites crashed and the credit card sized device became an overnight sensation.

I asked last year whether you could have too many such boards? The answer was apparently not; Imagination had just unveiled its CI20 board and demand for this device crashed its website.

Now, the latest Raspberry Pi has been unveiled. This time, element14 and RS Components were ready for demand. Not only did websites remain available, customers got their new device delivered promptly.

Who better to answer the question about whether there are too many such boards than Eben Upton, CEO of the Raspberry Pi trading company. At the launch of the latest Pi, he said the market for these devices was 'far from saturated' and that he expected sales over the coming year to exceed 2.4million units
