Infineon boss says Europe ‘taking step in the right direction’

Infineon's chief executive Dr Reinhard Ploss may have lifted the lid just a little bit on the content of the report submitted to Neelie Kroes by the European Leadership Group (ELG).

Kroes, you will recall, is aiming to boost Europe's semiconductor industry to the point where it represents 20% of the global business. There is a lot of money available – and even more money needs to come from industry – if the various companies 'get their act together'. Commissioner Kroes has asked the heads of a number of leading European companies to come up with a plan. Herding cats doesn't come into it. Europe's big three semiconductor companies are – or, at least, have been – committed to reducing their manufacturing capacity in favour of using foundries. Part of Kroes' plan could include financing a leading edge fab in Europe, but it needs the industry to back the idea. Speaking at Infineon's annual general meeting, Dr Ploss said: "A strong industrial sector is the foundation for economic success and prosperity in Europe. I therefore welcome the initiative of the European Commission to reindustrialise Europe. We are taking a step in the right direction here." Although the phrase isn't included in the distributed speech, Dr Ploss is said to have remarked: "Only pan European cooperation can ensure implementation of global industrial standards." Is Dr Ploss 'trailing' the ELG report or has he stepped out of line? The ELG's report is due soon, so it's a case of 'watch this space'.
