Dyson announces plans to launch EV

Dyson has revealed that it has begun work on an electric vehicle, with a proposed launch date of 2020. According to Sir James Dyson, in an email announcement to Dyson’s staff, there are already 400 people working on the project, which has a budget of $2billion. and Sir James says he is ‘recruiting aggressively’.

Quite what the vehicle might be remains cloaked in the usual level of Dyson secrecy. But we do know that Dyson acquired access to solid state battery technology when it invested $15million in University of Michigan spin off Sakti3 in 2015. And we know that Dyson is good at motors.

Whatever the vehicle turns out to be, it will be launched into an exceptionally competitive market. Electric vehicles in general are beginning to capture people’s attention and most major car builders have EVs on their near term product development plans. Oh, and there’s the small matter of Apple and Project Titan, which may – or may not – be about building an iCar. Some Apple watchers are claiming this is the case and it will have a launch date similar to that of Dyson’s vehicle.

But what would make a potential EV purchaser opt to spend their money on a Dyson vehicle – or an Apple iCar, come to that – rather than something from an established car company? What will make a Dyson EV a ‘must have’ item? And what happens if the Dyson EV goes wrong?
