A three phase brushless dc motor gate driver with power module has been introduced by Microchip. The MCP8024 includes functions that provide dsPIC Digital Signal Controllers and PIC microcontrollers with the ability to drive six n-channel mosfets. This, it adds, will bring improved performance and higher robustness, along with increased efficiency and lower system cost.

The MCP8024 operates across voltages ranging from of 6V to 28V and can withstand transient voltages of up to 48V. The device provides high integration analogue features, such as: three current sensing op amps; an over current comparator; mosfet drivers and a bidirectional communication interface for a complete motor system design. Meanwhile, configurable driver dead time management, driver blanking time control and overcurrent limit for external mosfets offer improved flexibility. An adjustable step down dc/dc converter provides a range of mcus with the efficiency benefits of a switch mode power supply. In addition, the ability to operate in temperatures ranging from -40 to 150°C allows the MCP8024 to be used in harsh environments. Available in thermally enhanced packages – either a 40pin qfn measuring 5 x 5mm or a 48pin tqfp measuring 7 x 7mm – the device is suitable for use in a range of automotive and industrial applications.
