Medical-grade monolithic ceramic capacitors for implanted medical devices

Murata has released a series of medical-grade monolithic ceramic capacitors for use in implanted medical devices such as cardiac pacemakers.

The GCH and GCR series with their medical grade high reliability specification is suitable for use in critical circuits (The GCR series) and non-critical circuits (The GCH series) within implanted medical devices such as pacemakers, cochlear implants, insulin pumps and gastric electrostimulators.

The devices feature a rated voltage of up to 100Vdc, a capacitance of between ±0.05 and ±0.5pF with a deviation of between ±0.5 and ±20% and operate across a temperature range of -55 to 125°C.

Since medical devices such as cardiac pacemakers are designed to be implanted in the patient’s body, achieving greater compactness in order to reduce the burden on the patient is an important issue. In response, the GCH and GHR series are both available in packages with footprints starting at 3.2 X 2.5mm down to 1.0 x 0.5mm

By enabling high-density design, Murata aims to contribute to the creation of even more compact implanted medical devices.
