LED lighting chipset targets automotive, industrial applications

ON Semiconductor has introduced two new led drivers for automotive, industrial and general lighting applications.

The NCL30051 is a dedicated led power supply IC capable of delivering a constant voltage to a step down dc/dc converter/led driver. The NCL30160 on the other hand, is a dimmable constant current step down (buck) led driver for high power leds. The NCL30051 combines a critical conduction mode, pfc controller and a half bridge resonant controller with a built in 600V driver. It is optimised for offline power supply applications and integrates open feedback loop protection, as well as pfc overvoltage and undervoltage detection mechanisms. The NCL30160 is designed to take the constant voltage delivered by the NCL30051 enabled power supply and step down the voltage to provide a constant current across the led string. ON claims that solutions with up to 98% efficiency are achieved by utilising the low 55m? internal mosfet. "The NCL30051 and NCL30160 ICs work in tandem to simplify power circuit designs with the minimal number of external components needed," said Bill Schromm, ON Semiconductor's senior vp. "This architecture allows the chipset to be incorporated into more compact and cost effective led lighting power supplies for general lighting applications." Both the NCL30051 and the NCL30160 have operating junction temperature ranges of -40 to 125°C.
