Herding the UK’s electronic cats

1 min read

For the last 18 months or so, an industry led research project has been looking at the UK's electronics systems sector, trying to get a feel for its size and how much it contributes to the UK's economy. Importantly, it's been looking at how the sector can make more of the available opportunities.

The results are due to be published this week. The ESCO Report - Electronics Systems Challenges and Opportunities - is likely to make several key recommendations to improve such areas as supply chains, procurement and skills. It will also highlight the dangers of not 'grasping the nettle'. It will point out that the industry's future is in its own hands and that it should not to rely on the Government to make things happen. If - and it's always a big 'if' when it comes to UK electronics - the industry can get its act together, ESCO believes the sector can achieve big things. A similar attempt to herd the UK's electronic cats was made a few years ago in the shape of the Electronics Innovation and Growth Team report. Great ambitions, but not the results that were anticipated. Perhaps we - as an industry - can get it right this time.
