Automotive grade boost controller incorporates multiple protection functions

Said to simplify the design process, reduce the bill of materials and shorten the design time, ON Semiconductor's adjustable output non synchronous boost controller is targeted at automotive systems and has a voltage range of between 3.2 and 44V.

The NCV8871 has a 3.0µA quiescent current when in sleep mode and can be used to drive an external N channel mosfet. It incorporates an internal regulator which supplies charge to the gate driver and features a synchronisable switching frequency, with two available versions that can be set at 170kHz or 1MHz.

Peak current mode control with internal slope compensation is said to ensure device stability over the automotive battery range. According to ON, this also ensures the device is protected during a current fault condition by turning off the power switch for the remainder of the cycle if the current limit is exceeded. Further protection is provided by a thermal shutdown mechanism and a 3.1V undervoltage lockout.

Additional options include different slope compensation values, current limit set points and different gate drive voltages for interfacing with various mosfets. The device is optimised for engine start/stop applications and supports multiple topology configurations, including boost, flyback, SEPIC and multiphase.
