The development of power semiconductors for use in motor control applications is driven by the need to produce designs that are not only electrically robust, but also cost effective.
In modern 1200V electrical motor control applications – such as drives for assembly lines, servos and auxiliary power units for heavy industrial machines – there is a growing demand for insulated gate bipolar transistors (igbts) that deliver high performance in terms of reliability, switching losses and short circuit behaviour whilst, at the same time, providing a cost effective solution.
