As the 'umbilical cord' which links office computers in an intranet, and connects that intranet to the internet, Ethernet has become the networking standard for pc connectivity in an office environment.

With high volumes driving the price of Ethernet components down substantially, Ethernet is now looking particularly attractive to other networked embedded applications. At its current price level, Ethernet, with its reliability, speed and flexibility offers more features per dollar than any other networking standard. One of the largest non pc application sectors beginning to adopt Ethernet is industrial automation.
