Simulation speeds solution

Full wave emi and thermal simulation cut time to market by 20%. By Jean-Philippe Tigneres.

Designing ruggedised computers for defence and avionics applications is one thing; testing them for electromagnetic interference (emi) and thermal performance is another.
In the past, Barco normally built several prototypes during the development process to manage emi environments. But use of full wave emi simulation and thermal analysis has managed to cut development time for the computers by 20%.

In a recent project, Barco used the first 3d full wave analysis software designed specifically to simulate electromagnetic compatibility (emc) issues prior to prototyping. Analysis of a previous and a new design helped engineers understand how various design parameters affected emc, for example, showing them that internal mechanical components had a greater than expected shielding effect in some places.
