What options are available to those designing systems for extreme environments? By Vanessa Knivett.

Portability of electronic equipment and its increasing application in areas such as motor vehicles means more designers are having to think about ruggedisation and accounting for temperature, moisture and vibration/shock.

However, whilst design for vibration resistance and temperature are inextricably linked in terms of the environmental standards that have arisen to cater for extreme environments, vibration resistant design involves more than just careful component selection.
