Redesign or retrofit?

Looking backwards to go forward. The trend towards retrofit backplane connectors. By Adrian Hyner.

Electronics designers are having to deal with ever increasing demands to support faster data speeds. This places considerable pressure on bus backplanes and, in particular, the connector interface – which can either be the facilitator of speed or, at the other end of the scale, the cause of a bottleneck.
Obviously, the latter needs to be avoided at all costs, but in a market where project cycle times for new products continue to shorten, this presents the designer with a real problem, because redesigning the backplane can take months – even years – to achieve.
However, an increasing number of electronics designers are turning to another solution: retrofit backplane connectors. This ensures that current and legacy systems are not rendered obsolete and makes it feasible to have just one backplane connector platform for both past and future developments, increasing performance with minimal design and implementation costs.
