Powering efficient solutions

Tighter digital design rules mean tougher challenges for power supply designers. By Mathew Jacob and John Fairbanks.

Tighter tolerances, higher packaging densities and the need for more power efficient solutions have complicated electronic product design. However, much better ic power supply tools are available to help product designers solve their problems. Today’s complex system products can use tiny, precise, high efficiency, magnetic buck converters for digital or baseband applications, as well as programmable power amplifiers. They can also make use of low cost switched capacitor buck converters to improve their efficiency compared to that of low drop out (ldo) regulators without the added complexity of a magnetic solution. Proper use of these tools can improve packaging density and power efficiency.
These regulators are more efficient than linear solutions for stepping down voltages and incorporate features that support their particular function. They provide efficient power management for voltage programmable power amplifiers and digital system applications for cellular handsets, pc cards and other uses.
