New IP69K connectors from Binder for harsh environments

New from Binder is the UL-approved connector Series 696 that is designed for outdoor use and is waterproof and dustproof to IP68, IP69k. Known as the HEC (harsh environment connector), the Series 696 withstands high-pressure washing and offers high levels of resistance to UV, temperature fluctuations, acid rain, salt spray, ozone and other pollutants.

This makes it ideal for all applications operating in harsh environments including agricultural and construction equipment, traffic and signalling systems, process engineering plants and water purification and recycling equipment.

The trend to use of computers to control mechanical and hydraulic equipment significantly increases the requirement for connectors. For example, seeding systems in use today are worlds apart from those used 15 years ago.Previously, seed dosage was controlled via a dial according to the judgement of the operator whereas today, the tractor has GPS support and a PC, using an intelligent software program, calculates seed requirements and controls output precisely via electrically controlled dispensers. This and other developments are characteristic for many applications that were hitherto completely void of electronic support and the HEC connector was designed to meet this requirement.

A three-point bayonet locking system makes for a quick and secure fastening, while a robust coding mechanism prevents incorrect orientation. The connector is suitable for over 1000 mating cycles and uses a variety of crimp contacts to achieve a secure, vibration-proof termination.

The initial contact arrangement is an eight-pole hybrid with four signal contacts and three +PE that can accommodate a variety of wire gauges.Signal contacts are rated up to 3A and 60V and power contacts to 25A and 400V.Contacts are gold-plated and the system caters for cable sizes from 6 to 17mm in diameter.
