Why today’s system designers prefer software for thermal management predictions instead of a crystal ball! By Mike Richardson.

It doesn’t take psychic powers to know that designers must consider thermal solutions and electromechanical requirements at the earliest stage of design. Thermal management software can help identify any problems before investing in detailed routing, making it possible to achieve the desired performance without introducing additional design costs.
Whilst guesstimates can be used, they do not provide accurate enough information for trade offs to be evaluated properly. Thermal management software is about the prediction of the thermal response of a proposed electronics design using numerical computational techniques. This makes it possible to achieve the desired performance without introducing any additional design or manufacturing costs.
Flomerics’ product manager Robin Bornoff says that, to achieve this, three things need to be considered.
