Go with the flow

Managing data flow in communications networks. By Michael Olsen.

Users want more and more new services from communications networks and their demands are having a major impact on the design of the infrastructure.

Additional bandwidth is not only needed to accommodate the growing amount of multimedia content on web sites; businesses are using the internet to transmit an increasing amount of time sensitive organisational data. Driven by new applications in e-business, enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management, the quantity of data stored by organisations is doubling each year.

These changing demands are producing two very distinct types of traffic on the internet – sequential and random. Of course, a large proportion of internet traffic is still sequential, but as broadband services grow in popularity and the amount of multimedia traffic increases, consequently the percentage of time sensitive traffic is growing rapidly. An ever increasing amount of internet traffic, usually voice or video, must arrive on time if it is to serve its purpose. These types of files are usually very large, and therefore make high demands on the bandwidth of the communications infrastructure.
