Embedding the web

Choosing a TCP/IP protocol stack solution is more than just a question of cost. By Nigel Burgess.

The advent of internet connectivity for non pc applications has spawned a multitude of solutions which can be categorised into two main types: single; and two processor solutions.
In a single processor solution, the required protocols are integrated or embedded into the application software and the required hardware may be included on a single board (Impact Memec’s p@ac solution and NEC’s 78K Hopper can be used in these cases.)
In two processor solutions, a host processor works with a coprocessor, which handles the required internet protocols. This can be integrated into the same box as the host processor or connected externally. A number of ready made add ons are available, such as Connect One’s iChip solutions and NEC’s Netchip solutions. Customised add ons are also available, where the internet connectivity is provided by coprocessor software tailored for a particular application.
