Old radio standards rarely die, yet new standards come on line every few years. This forces radio designers to design their systems to be compatible with as many standards as possible. Many communications applications have been slowly adopting various aspects of software defined radio (SDR) so, as standards evolve, the hardware can remain the same, with only software being updated.
