Brick by brick

Power density and efficiency are two measurements of success for many dc/dc converters, but often mutually exclusive. But a breakthrough in transformer technology could change all that. By Philip Ling.

The power of modules, no pun intended, means power specialists continue to push their design teams to come up with ways to improve power density and efficiency. This round up of some recent announcements shows that efficiencies approaching or even exceeding 90% are becoming common place, while there will always be demand for more power from the same footprint.
Mixing and matching power modules is a lot easier if a standard form factor is used, so many are concentrating on the standard full brick outline.
