Better building blocks

Will Advanced Switching make system building child’s play? By Graham Pitcher.

The telecommunications sector has taken a serious beating over the last two years, due mainly to the collapse of the dot com sector. But the industry was already going through a transition from its historical proprietary approach. The dot com bubble added massively to its pain.

One of the ways in which telecomms equipment manufacturers planned to move their industry forwards was to take advantage of open standards, reducing cost and complexity. One of the solutions at the heart of this approach is PCI Express.

Alan Murphy, an Intel business development manager, believes that PCI Express has developed from the telecomms industry's dilemma. "They are looking to build equipment on a modular basis, say, taking a processor from one source, memory from another and then dealing with a board vendor. This approach needs a standards based interconnect to make sure that all the elements fit together." And that standards based interconnect is – at least in Intel's view – PCI Express.
