A cut above the rest

VITA46 may at first glance be something just for the eyes of avionics systems builders, but it points to wider industry trends. By Vanessa Knivett.

With multigigabit per second demands and the increasing popularity of digital serial interfaces across the electronics market, it is no surprise that the military and aerospace sectors are now looking for the performance that the consumer world enjoys.

So, in a bid to leverage high speed interconnect technologies across the military and aerospace market, a working group was set up towards the latter half of 2003 to provide a detailed specification of VITA 46, a continuation of the VME roadmap.

Comments Ian Stalker, marketing communications manager at DY4 Systems, one of the collaborators in the VITA 46 working party: "Enabling VME to keep up with faster data rates is something that we have been facing for some time and is only going to get worse. A wave of switch fabric is on its way."
