Field programmable gate arrays power innovative video processing engine

Lattice Semiconductor's LatticeXP2 fpgas are being used to power the first low power, lossless real time video processing platform.

The fpgas have been selected by graphics processing specialist, Thruput for its MIDAS platform, which has eight dual link inputs and drives up to three full resolution monitors. According to Thruput, MIDAS delivers more than 2billion pixels per second of processing power. The toolbox has been designed to allow outputs to be processed at 48ms average latency, which enables real time video cropping, translation, alpha channel layering and colour manipulation.

The processing is implemented using 17 integrated LatticeXP2 fpgas, while video is processed through a video hardware data path that provides a deterministic latency and controlled failure modes. According to Lattice, this allows MIDAS to be used in demanding safety critical systems.
