Embedded World 2018 Round-Up Part 3

As Embedded World 2018 closes it doors, New Electronics takes a look back at a few of the products that were released at this year's show.

Socionext and Varjo used Embedded World to announce an ongoing co-operation around Varjo’s next-generation VR/XR solutions. The company’s next generation VR/XR headset is based on a combination of the company’s patented human-eye resolution technology and Socionext’s Milbeaut image signal processing solutions.
Varjo has developed a VR/XR headset display that can visualize images at 70MP with a 100° fieldof-view, which is far beyond what is supported by current first-generation VR headsets.
The camera processing is extremely complex and Varjo said that it uses Socionext’s Milbeaut high-performance image signal processor technology to provide the high imaging resolution and quality required.

Cypress Semiconductor unveiled a serial nonvolatile memory family offering improved levels of performance and reliability for mission-critical data capture.
The Excelon Ferroelectric Random Access Memory (F-RAM) family provides high-speed nonvolatile data logging, preventing data-loss even in harsh automotive and industrial operating environments over extreme temperatures. The Excelon Auto series offers 2-Mb to 4-Mb automotive-grade densities, while the Excelon Ultra series offers 4-Mb to 8-Mb industrial-grade densities.
“The ability to instantly capture the last event data in automotive data recorders is a game-changer in crash forensics, especially with the increased deployment of semi- and fully-autonomous vehicles,” said Sam Geha, corporate executive vice president of the Memory Products Division at Cypress.
“Additionally, Industry 4.0 deployments require high speed, high-reliability data-logging to ensure system up-time while improving efficiencies. Failure is not an option when dealing with data this valuable and mission-critical. Our Excelon F-RAM devices provide nonvolatile memories with instant nonvolatility, high speed, high endurance and low power modes, making them the ideal choice to capture and protect the most critical data in advanced factory automation and industrial IoT systems.”

congatec introduced its first MIPI-CSI 2 Smart Camera Kit for vision systems at the edge of the IIoT. It is an application-ready kit for the evaluation and deployment of MIPI-CSI 2 based rugged smart camera analytics in harsh industrial, outdoor, and in-vehicle environments.
Developers benefit from an instantly deployable industrial-grade smart MIPI-CSI platform. Built with commercial, off-the-shelf available components, it is intended to simplify development and accelerates the time to market of smart camera analytics solutions for the edge of the IIoT.
MIPI-CSI is the most widely used camera interface for consumer-grade mobile devices. Implementing this high-speed protocol on embedded boards such as the Pico-ITX motherboard from congatec simplifies the support of high-performance applications, including 1080p, 4k, 8k and beyond for rugged industrial-grade 24/7 embedded systems, as the ecosystem for MIPI-CSI is rich and highly elaborate.

Diodes Incorporated used Embedded World to introduce the ZXGD3113 synchronous rectifier controller. When coupled with a MOSFET, the pairing can be used to replace lossy Schottky rectifiers in power supplies based on a flyback or resonant converter topology.
The ZXGD3113 controls an external MOSFET, such as the 100V 16mΩ N-channel DMT10H015LPS, configured to operate as an ideal diode. Replacing a Schottky rectifier with the ZXGD3113+MOSFET can significantly increase the efficiency of AC-DC power supplies targeting the industrial, consumer and telecommunications markets.
Improved efficiency means that there is no need for a heatsink to save space compared to a lossy Schottky rectifier. Furthermore, the smaller form-factor SOT26 reduces the solution size from the industry-standard SO8 and, by operating up to 250kHz, the PSU designers can use smaller transformers, further saving space and BOM costs.
