European semi sales slide

Revenues from sales of semiconductors in Europe declined by 6% in the fourth quarter of 2007 and by 1.9% for the full year, according to DMASS, the Distributors’ and Manufacturers’ Association of Semiconductor Specialists. The group claimed distribution revenues in Q4 were €1.21billion and €5.37bn Euro for 2007.

Intersil names Bell as ceo

Intersil has named David Bell, pictured, as its new ceo. Previously, Bell was Intersil’s chief operating officer, having joined from Linear Technology.

ST targets mobiles with NFC chip

Looking to move Near Field Communications into the mobile phone arena, STMicroelectronics has unveiled a secure SoC solution implemented in its 0.13µm embedded non volatile eeprom technology.

Partnership addresses lcd controllers

Renesas, Sharp and Powerchip are establishing a joint venture which will specialise in drivers and controllers for small and mid size lcds. According to the partners, the new company – Renesas SP Drivers – will begin operations in April.

NXP, ARM extend relationship

NXP and ARM have expanded their strategic relationship by signing a new licensing agreement, which includes the ARM Cortex-M3 processor, as well as other ARM technology.

Microchip refocuses distribution

Microchip has refocused its distribution network so that Avnet Electronics Marketing and Future Electronics will handle its products globally. As part of the refocusing, Microchip has terminated its relationship with Arrow with immediate effect.

Freescale to buy SigmaTel

Freescale has signed a definitive agreement to acquire SigmaTel, a provider of analogue intensive, mixed signal ics targeted at digital multimedia applications. The deal values SigmaTel at $110million.

DRAM battlefield

Despite being the best performing dram manufacturer in the last quarter of 2007, Elpida saw sales revenue decline by more than 10%. This was in the context of a sector where sales revenues dropped by 40% in the same time frame.

Mitsubishi buys Renesas fab

An agreement between Mitsubishi Electric and Renesas will see the former acquire the buildings and associated manufacturing facilities of Renesas’ Kumamoto factory.
