ARC buys multimedia specialist

ARC has acquired the privately held US multimedia specialist Alarity for £2million and will set up a development centre in St Petersburg to complement existing ARC design centres in the UK and the US.

Alarity specialises in codec software, firmware, and advanced multimedia architectures and the acquisition will enhance ARC’s product development efforts and customer specific engineering capabilities. According to ARC. Alarity’s technologies are ‘essential’ to the creation of complete next generation systems for HD DVD, BluRay DVD, iPTV and HDTV broadcast standards.
Carl Schlachte, ARC’s president and ceo, pictured, said: “The acquisition supports ARC’s strategy of providing comprehensive, integrated SoC solutions for advanced multimedia applications. In engagements with major customers, Alarity has proven its ability to optimise algorithms, software and system architectures for highly efficient and ultra low power operations.”
According to Alarity cofounder Felix Litvinsky: “This is an exciting time in ARC’s history as the company grows its capabilities in optimised multimedia hardware, software, and development tools. We are pleased to be joining ARC and look forward to extending the joint development work already underway.”
