EV charging points getting smarter

New research from Berg Insight suggests that the number of connected EV charging points across Europe and North America will have reached over 1.6 million units in 2020.

According to the research Europe will account for around 1.3 million of these charging points. That’s a connectivity penetration rate of 53 per cent.

By contrast, in North America around 0.3 million charging points were connected, equivalent to a connectivity penetration rate of 40 per cent.

The number of connected charging points in the two regions, however, is expected to jump and to reach 7.9 million units in 2025 - that would represent an annual growth rate of around 40 per cent.

The companies in this space comprise of dedicated charging station management software providers, hardware providers as well as charge point operators (CPOs) and, critically for wider levels of adoption, many of these back-office platforms are now being offered as white-label solutions.

The integration of communications equipment in EV charging stations is certainly helping to improve operations and to deliver a much better level of service.

While most of these connected charging stations are currently in public or semi-public applications, it now appears that the number of connected home charging stations is set to increase as homes become smarter boosting the market further.
