Quarter brick IBC module provides up to 850W output power

Vicor has announced a new quarter brick intermediate bus converter (IBC) module that can provide up to 850W of output power – exceeding the power capability and efficiency of competitive bus converters, according to the modular power components specialist.

The IB050Q096T80N1-00 is the newest addition to Vicor's IBC050 range of VI BRICK IBCs and is suitable for applications spanning enterprise, optical access and storage networks. The module is available as a drop in upgrade for industry standard 5:1 fixed ratio converters and operates from a 36 to 60V input voltage range, with 2250 Vdc isolation from input to output while achieving 98% peak efficiency. It is rated at up to 80A, 850W from 55 to 60Vin and 550W from 36Vin. Vicor says the 58.4 x 36.8 x 10.5mm quarter brick module allows designers to conserve valuable board space and achieve full load operation at 50°C with 400 LFM airflow.

The IBC module is designed to yield maximum usable power in thermally constrained systems and its open frame construction facilitates airflow above and below the module, minimising temperature rise of downstream components. It uses an industry standard form factor and pinout.

Using Vicor's Sine Amplitude Converter topology, IBC050 series modules are pin compatible with industry standard 'square wave' bus converters, which are fundamentally limited by switching losses to low operating frequencies, low power densities and low bandwidth. Operating at 1MHz, the module is said to cut transient response time by a factor of 10 and eliminates the need for bulk capacitors across the intermediate bus.

"Customers in the high performance networking domain seek high efficiency, high density IBC modules delivering the maximum usable power in the least space," said Robert Marchetti, senior manager of Product Marketing for Vicor's Brick Business Unit. "With our new 850W IB050Q096T80N1-00 IBC module, these customers can reclaim board space for high value components that yield competitive advantages including greater system functionality and service capacity."
