MIT researchers pursue ultra low power chip for medical apps 09/03/2010
Engineers from MIT's Microsystems Technology Laboratory (MTL) are working on tiny, low power chips that could diagnose heart problems, monitor patients with Parkinson's disease or predict seizures in epileptic patients, according to MIT News. Such wearable or implantable devices could transform the way medicine is practiced and help cut the costs of expensive diagnostic tests. Dennis Buss, former vp of silicon technology development at Texas Instruments and a visiting scientist at MIT, said: "Microelectronics has the potential to reduce the cost of health care in the same way it reduced the costs of computing in the 1980s and communications in the 1990s."
Synopsys, IMEC collaborate on 3d stacking 09/03/2010
Synopsys and Belgian nanoelectronics research centre IMEC has have entered into a collaboration under which they will use Synopsys' TCAD finite element method tools for characterising and optimising the reliability and electrical performance of through silicon vias (TSVs). According to the companies, their collaboration will accelerate the development of 3d stacked ic technologies.
Ingenious Britain report calls for ‘cultural change’ 09/03/2010
Sir James Dyson's report 'Ingenious Britain', commissioned by the Conservative party last year to identify ways of making the UK the top high tech exporter in Europe, calls for 'cultural change' to develop higher esteem for science and engineering. According to Sir James: "Now, more than at any time over the past 20 years, I sense there is a real opportunity to set a new vision for our economy. To do this, a new government must take immediate action to put science and engineering at the centre of its thinking – in business, industry, education and – crucially – in public culture."
Manufacturing industry demands action 08/03/2010
Representatives from the UK's manufacturing industry made their concerns very clear at The Future of UK Manufacturing Summit, held last week at the Institute of Mechanical Engineers in London.
