EMCUK 12th - 13th October 2010
EMCUK will be held at Newbury Racecourse, Newbury on 12 and 13 October. In addition to technical and training sessions, there will be an exhibition featuring such companies as BAE Systems, CST UK, Rohde & Schwarz, QinetiQ, Agilent, Teseq and Milmega. Technical workshops will cover: defence and aerospace; lightning; and commercial emc, with each session comprising a number of presentations. Alongside these will be training courses addressing: electronic fundamentals for good emc; the basics of emissions and immunity testing; and immunity requirements related to design choices. All delegates will receive a copy of EMC Banana Skins, a 240page pocket book which contains 50 reports of electromagnetic Inference.

Closing the skills gap

The skills gap has been the subject of many commentaries over the recent past. The problem of an aging engineering population, combined with a decrease in the number of people looking to follow engineering as a career, means there's a shortfall. EngineeringUK summed up the problem in its report published at the end of 2009. According to its research, the UK needs to create 580,000 engineers in the next few years – replacing those who are close to retirement and to fill new jobs. This can only be done by attracting new entrants to the profession or by upskilling those from other sectors. That's a significant number of people and a figure that's not going to be attained overnight.
