Power

Power electronics is a key element in the world of electronic design and engineering and electronic engineers need to have a thorough understanding of this area if they’re going to create successful products.

In this section, New Electronics keeps designers up to date with the latest developments in the power electronics market – everything from DC/DC converters to IGBTs to battery technology. In fact, New Electronics covers any power product that can go on a PCB.

High voltage, low dropout linear regulators

Linear Technology has announced new wider temperature range versions of its LT1763, LT3008 and LT3010 high voltage linear regulators. The new high reliability MP grade features operation from -55 to 125°C for a range of applications including avionics, military, industrial, automotive, rf and telecom.

Compact battery charger IC

Maxim's latest battery charger IC integrates dual Quick-PWM step down controllers to deliver what it claims to be the most compact power solution for notebooks, UMPCs, MIDs, and other portable applications.

Three phase step down dc/dc controller

Linear Technology has introduced the LTC3829, a three phase single output high efficiency (up to 95%) synchronous step-down dc/dc controller with PolyPhase operation, differential output voltage sensing and integrated phased lock loop (PLL) clock synchronisation.

DC/DC step down regulator

Micrel has introduced a high performance 600mA DC/DC step down regulator, the MIC2808. The device is intended for powering a power amplifier (PA) in mobile devices and comes with dual low noise low dropout regulators for rf chipset support.

Intelligent power switch

Power semiconductor specialist, STMicroelectronics has introduced an intelligent power switch (IPS) for use in industrial controls. It is designed to provide improved accuracy to minimise energy losses and prevent system errors when faults occur.

DIN rail power supply range expanded

Campbell Collins, a supplier of power supplies, capacitors and power semiconductors has announced an addition to its range of DIN rail mounted power supplies from MTM Power of Germany.

High frequency buck converter

The AP5100 step-down converter from Diodes Incorporated has been designed to bring space savings and efficiency improvements to set top box, modem and distributed power applications.

New range of embedded power supplies

Campbell Collins, a supplier of power supplies, capacitors and power semiconductors, has added to its franchise list by taking on Integrated Power Designs' (IPD) range of AC/DC and DC/DC embedded power supplies.

Brick power module optimises 5V bus voltage to match load requirement

Ericsson's BMR454 0002/004 is described as having a typical efficiency of 94% at 50% load and 93.5% at 100% load. Due to digitally controlled dead-time optimisation combined with a power-train, the BMR454 0002/004's flat efficiency curve is designed to reduce power losses to a minimum, making it possible to pack as much power into an eight-brick format, as would normally only be possible in a quarter-brick module.

Integrated power modules for POL supplies

Intersil's ISL8204M and ISL8206M are switch mode power supplies in a single compact surface mount package. Integrated are a PWM controller, power mosfets, power inductor and associated discrete components.

Compact filter for dc/dc converters

Calex Electronics has launched a filter module for dc/dc converters. The EFIL-100-10 filter module is 1 x 2 x 0.45in input differential and common mode filter for Calex dc/dc converters.

Switching power inductors for SMPS

Designed for use in the input or output sections of switch mode power supplies, Total Frequency Control is offering vertical mount semi encapsulated power inductors for applications such as mobile phone chargers, computer power supplies and lighting applications.
