FPGA/ASIC/DSP

Despite the availability of a range of commodity products, designers often need to turn to custom devices to meet particular needs. But which technology best suits the application? Should you base your design around an FPGA or is it better to use an ASIC? Can you meet your design requirements using a DSP?

In this section, New Electronics brings you the latest developments from the advanced platforms market, looking at how to develop and apply FPGA, ASIC and DSP technology.

Next generation PMBus digital controller targets high-performance computing

Powervation has launched a high-performance digital DC/DC controller for FPGA, ASIC, and POL power for communications & computing applications. Designed for key rails that require precision output voltage regulation and tight control during transient conditions, the PV3105 digital controller provides low jitter and low output voltage ripple, and improved transient response, making it suitable for powering low-voltage, high current rails on leading process nodes for ASICs/FPGAs.

Fully encapsulated 50A digital power module from Intersil

Intersil has unveiled the ISL8272M, its first 50A fully encapsulated digital DC/DC PMBus power module. The device is a complete step down power supply that delivers up to 50A from industry standard 12V or 5V input power rails. Four modules can be combined to provide up to 200A.

Intersil unveils synchronous buck regulator for FPGAs and MCUs

The new ISL8002B synchronous buck (step-down) switching regulator from Intersil has been designed to deliver up to 2A of continuous output current from a 2.7V to 5.5V input supply. Along with the device’s 2MHz switching frequency it provides additional programmable soft-start, and output tracking and sequencing of FPGAs and microprocessors, providing increased system reliability for point-of load conversions in networking, factory automation, instrumentation, and medical equipment.

New Smartwatch reference model from Toshiba

A new Smartwatch Reference Model, with enhanced sport, activity and lifestyle features, has been unveiled by Toshiba Electronics Europe. Built around the TZ1001MBG ApP Lite application processor, it provides developers with a starting point for designing smartwatches for sport watch applications.

Lattice enables faster IEC61508 certification

Lattice Semiconductor is making available a new Functional Safety Design Flow solution based on the Lattice Diamond Design Tools.Certified by TÜV-Rheinland, the safety and quality testing organisation, the package is intended to help users by simplifying and speeding up the IEC61508 safety certification process for applications using Lattice FPGAs.

SoC for high end automotive display systems

Renesas Electronics and its subsidiary, Renesas Mobile have unveiled a new automotive SoC, the SH7769, for high end automotive display systems (graphics cluster, multifunction graphics display) supporting advanced human machine interfaces.

TFT with on board asic controller

The new combination of TFT with on board asic controller from GTK is designed to offer a number of advantages over the traditional TFT product. According to GTK, it retains all the functionality of traditional TFTs but the additional controller makes programming and interfacing much simpler and the transition from mono graphic to colour displays is easier.

High speed data converters and IF diversity receivers

Analog Devices has launched four high speed data converter products designed to support signal sampling rates necessary to accommodate multi carrier radio platform requirements for 3G and 4G cellular infrastructure communication standards. These include CDMA2000, UMTS/LTE, TD-SCDMA and TD-LTE.

Low power current monitors

With an operating current of 3µA, the ZXCT11xx series of low power high side current monitors from Diodes Incorporated is designed to provide accurate, high efficiency measurement of load current in motor drive, overload protection and safety applications.
