Energy storage solution for EVs and other booster applications

Generally, a vehicle will operate in the partial-load operational range. However, short-term high load actions, such as overtaking or high rate recuperation with strong breaking, require them to have significant power reserves.

Fraunhofer ISIT aims to provides a solution for these peaks in power. It has developed an additional modular accumulator system comprising a Li-Booster battery, combined with what it says is a highly responsive and power efficient battery electronic.

The company states that the Li-Booster cells have been designed to maximise safety, meet high power demands and provide cycling stability of more than 10.000 cycles at a 2C rate and 100% DoD.

The battery cells should be able to discharge up to 50C and charge up to 20C peak power, due to a combination of Lithium titan oxide and special separator results.

An alternative method of power distribution has also been established for balancing between modules. With MOS-FET technology, the electronic bridges complete modules rather than moving energy between them.

The module concept aims to offer higher safety trough operation of the module with its voltage measurement and an active balancing system. The battery module also includes an effective cooling system.
