EDA / PCB Design

The world of electronic design automation is broad, covering everything from the simplest PCB to the most complex custom device. But without such tools, designers would be unable to create innovative consumer and industrial products.

In this section, New Electronics provides technical insight on the latest PCB design packages, as well as on the design tools essential to the creation of devices such as FPGAs and ASICs.

Advanced low profile heatsinks

Versarien has introduced a series of low profile heatsinks utilising VersarienCu proprietary microporous copper technology to deliver thermal performance for passive implementations by increasing its surface area.

Stackable FPGA solution

The EMC2-7A board, from Sundance, can be used with commercial, industrial or automotive graded Artix-7 FPGAs and features 1Gbyte of DDR3 local storage, 32Mbyte of flash for storage/configurations and has 68x free differential I/O pins routed to a VITA57.1 FMC-LPC high-speed connector.

Pool production of Flexible PCBs

Beta LAYOUT has introduced a manufacturing service which offers the production of prototype Flexible PCBs using the PCB-POOL method. Numerous different PCB designs are combined and orders are manufactured together, which is said to help reduce the overall cost and eliminate expensive tooling charges.

Extension to PCB design tool

Altium has released MCAD Co-Designer: Solidworks, an extension for Altium Designer that provides integrated design data and a managed design revision environment between electrical and mechanical design teams working in Altium Designer and Solidworks respectively.

Evaluation board strengthens support for software-defined sensor

Melexis has introduced an evaluation board (EVB) to strengthen the support available for its MLX90393 programmable magnetic sensor IC. The MLX90393 EVB offers engineers a platform for constructing a wide variety of human machine interfaces and has the potential to support more sophisticated designs such as complex 3D sensing systems, such as joysticks or rotary knobs with push functions included.
