Sensing an opportunity
Consumer electronics applications are growing the market for MEMS based sensors. By Graham Pitcher.
Believe it or not, but micromachined accelerometers have been in use in the automotive industry for more than a decade. From their original application as a means of crash detection and hence firing airbags, accelerometers have migrated to become part of a car’s navigation system and stability control.
Christophe Lemaire is a business development engineer with Analog Devices’ MEMS group. He said the company started working on MEMS devices some 17 years ago, with the first commercial product announced in 1992. “Over the last eight or ten years, we have started to pay more attention to the consumer market. Whilst the automotive market is still the largest revenue generator, the consumer market is developing quickly.”
