Memory on the move

How memory is integrated has a profound impact in mobile applications. By Martin Brox.

For drams in mobile applications, there are three critical factors to consider: power, space and temperature. Mobile applications require power sensitive and low voltage designs to extend battery life as much as possible. As the trend for mobile devices is towards smaller dimensions and increasing complexity, more functions have to be implemented in a shrinking space. Chip scale or multi chip packages are, therefore, the package technologies of choice. And in contrast to office based pcs, mobile devices need to be able to operate at an extended temperature range of -25°C to +85 °C – a challenge in cost optimised dram processes.
