Cisc can beat risc

How the latest cisc processor technology is helping to simplify the design of industrial applications. By Roland Gehrmann.

As pressure mounts to improve system performance and reduce development time (and, therefore, time to market), there is growing demand for integrated semiconductor solutions that simplify application design. Nowhere is this more critical than with the microcontrollers increasingly found at the heart of modern electronic equipment. As a result, semiconductor manufacturers must continually develop devices that combine ongoing speed and performance increases with on board functionality that minimises the need for external components.

Cisc vs risc
For many designers, the need to improved performance levels means they may have to consider a move from conventional cisc architectures to risc based designs. However, time to market pressures and the benefits of reusing existing or 'legacy' software and IP can often be a significant barrier. In particular, many designers in the industrial control arena would prefer to remain with cisc devices and have access to higher levels of performance.
