Nokia has announced plans to form a 'broad strategic partnership' with Microsoft. The deal would see Nokia use the Windows phone operating system for its smartphones. The announcement follows a memo earlier this week in which Nokia's chief executive Stephen Elop, pictured, warned that the company was in crisis. The deal is being established as pressure grows from other smartphone platforms such as Google's Android and Apple's iPhone.

Intel, Nokia and the University of Oulu have announced the establishment of their first joint research centre. According to Intel, one of the first objectives of the Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Centre is to create new mobile phone user experiences – and could eventually display 3d holograms of the person the user is talking to.

Renesas Electronics and Nokia are forming a strategic business alliance to develop modem technologies for HSPA+/LTE communications.
As part of this alliance, the companies have entered into an agreement under which Renesas will acquire Nokia's wireless modem business for approximately $200million. The alliance will be enhanced by long term joint research cooperation on future radio technologies.
