UK engineering the basis of 'a strong and thriving Britain' says Lord Mandelson
Secretary of State for the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills, Lord Mandelson has stated that science and engineering in the UK is 'at the heart of a strong and thriving Britain'. He made the comments at the National Science and Engineering Competition at The Big Bang Fair in Manchester.
The winner of the UK Young Engineer of the Year was Shawn Brown for a solar bike built with as much sustainable and reusable material as possible. Thomas Hearing won UK Young Scientist of the Year for the development of a geographical information system.
Lord Mandelson presented the two winners with certificates, a cash prize of £2,000; a choice of a visit to Earthwatch or NASA and an additional trip to CERN to see the Large Hadron Collider or the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma.
Lord Mandelson said: "The winners of the National Science & Engineering Competition are living, breathing proof that science and engineering in the UK is at the heart of a strong and thriving Britain over the coming decades. Our young scientists and engineers, guided by schemes like the National Science & Engineering Competition will help ensure that our businesses remain competitive, that we have a buoyant job market and that the economy of the UK can thrive amidst increasing global competition."
