TI first licensee of next generation ARM Cortex-A series processor core

  • Remi El-Ouazzane

Texas Instruments has announced it is to be the first company to partner with ARM on the next generation ARM Cortex-A series processor core to be announced later this year.

TI says it intends to use the new Eagle processor to strengthen its future OMAP platform offerings.

The company formally engaged with ARM on the project in June 2009 and during this time, leveraged its low power, SoC platform experience to advance the processor core's definition.

According to TI, future OMAP platform solutions based on the new ARM processor core could 'radically transform' devices. Using its SmartReflex power and performance management technology, the company claims it can deliver SoCs with 'industry leading' low power consumption.

Remi El-Ouazzane (pictured), TI's vice president, OMAP platform business unit says the new ARM processor core has the potential for broader market application across the company's product portfolio. He said: "We are thrilled to know that our customers will be the first to leverage the new ARM processor core's far reaching innovations via our industry-leading OMAP products. Successful mobile industry achievements revolve around the 'high performance, low power' mantra, and we believe the results of our collaborative effort echo the importance of this must-have balance."
