SOS isn’t for GaAs
Peregrine's silicon on saphire technology wins £17.6m funding support.
The industry is waking up to the potential of silicon on insulator, as Peregrine Semiconductor receives $17.6million in late stage financing. It shows support for its ‘disruptive’ technology based on silicon on sapphire, a near perfect insulator, which it employs in mixed signal and RF circuits.
Its technology follows an industry standard cmos wafer processing format but claims it delivers RF performance to rival bulk silicon and BiCmos, and even SiGe and GaAs. Peregrine’s focus is currently on the front end and transceiver blocks of RF wireless systems, traditionally the domain of GaAs.
