Sky bringing 3D television to British viewers
Sky TV has announced plans to introduce 3D television via a high definition set top box.
The broadcaster explained that the system could be used on domestic TVs via existing Sky+HD set tops.
Although viewers will need to wear the long established 3D ‘glasses’, designers are working on a system where these will no longer be necessary.
Sky has developed the system of delivering pictures to a Hyundai 3D television by filming two cameras side to side in a rig pointing down to a moveable mirror, which allows for more control over the depth of field. The double output is then turned into 3D during the production process.
Currently, the system is a working prototype and may not necessarily be the version that is eventually launched to the public. However, Sky is confident that public demand will be high and is keen to receive consumer feedback as trials continue.
