RTOS saves time on embedded system products

Renesas Electronics has announced the availability of a real time kernel for its V850E2/Mx4 series of microcontrollers.

According to the semiconductor specialist, the µC/OS-III, from Micrium, provides an intuitive framework for developing multitask applications that take advantage of the V850E2/Mx4's capabilities.

The series of mcus comprises both single and dual core devices with a processing performance of 2.56 Dhrystone MIPS/MHz per core – 1.4 times higher than the company's previous V850E2M core. Renesas states that by using the dual core service, embedded system designers can achieve processing performance of 1024DMIPS at a clock speed of 200MHz, while maintaining low power consumption of 0.8mW per Dhrystone MIPS – 60% less than by using one core.

According to Renesas, the µC/OS-III kernel features clean source code and is documented in easy to understand books, rather than standard reference manuals. It is able to run multiple high priority tasks at the same time as the mcus are processing and features an optimised task manager which supports both preemptive and round robin scheduling. Additional kernel objects include semaphores, mutual exclusion algorithms, message queues, event flags and timers.
