Researchers claim doubling of lithium ion battery life

  • Researchers claim doubling of lithium ion battery life

Researchers at Graz University of Technology claim to have developed a technology that could double the storage capacity of lithium ion batteries.

In the process, researchers have created a silicon based gel and applied it to a graphite substrate. "In this way," said Stefan Koller, pictured, from the University's Institute for Chemistry and Technology of Materials, "the graphite works as a buffer, cushioning the big changes in volume of the silicon during the uptake and transfer of lithium ions."
The findings – which were discovered as part of the EU NanoPoliBat project – have been submitted to the patent office by the researchers, along with partner Varta Microbattery.
