Radio agnosticism

  • Radio agnosticism

In a move to reduce development time and cost for distributed radio networks, Cyan Technology has launched a range of gateways in partnership with Ember, Micrel and Radiocrafts.

Kenn Lamb, Cyan’s ceo, said: “By partnering with (these three companies), Cyan can offer customers a range of low cost, highly versatile end to end solutions.”
Each gateway is based on a ‘radio agnostic’ Cyan module. Product developers can then choose either Cyan’s Wireless M-bus gateway, featuring Radiocrafts’ RC11x0 Wireless M-Bus module and supporting 868MHz communications, or Cyan’s ZigBee gateway, which supports 2.4GHz links via the Ember 260 module. A further version – the Cy-Net gateway – uses Cyan’s proprietary radio networking technology and currently supports 433, 470, 868 and 915MHz frequencies using rf devices from Micrel. All modules can be programmed using Cyan’s CyanIDE graphical development environment.
Lamb noted: “The eCOG1X 16bit microcontroller is a powerful device which allows us to accomplish what others need 32bit micros to do.” And Lamb says the modules will cost around $100 in production volumes, which he claims is half the price of competitive devices.
“A lot of people are working hard to getting the cost of nodes down, but increasing functionality. When they see the Cyan module, they are leaping on it because we’ve removed the need to understand the underlying technology,” Lamb added.
