Nujira enters deal with RFMD to boost infrastructure efficiency
One of the consequences of the iPhone's success is an 'explosion' in the amount of data passing over the mobile phone network. According to Jeremy Hendy, vp of sales and marketing with Nujira, networks are now 'falling over' and operators are having to roll out additional infrastructure more quickly than planned.
"When we talk to infrastructure vendors," he noted, "we find they are having to do 50 power amp (PA) designs a year and they're finding it a challenge. It's a portfolio management problems and we're announcing products for infrastucture and handsets at Mobile World Congress."
In a move to address infrastructure complexity, Nujira has partnered with RF Micro Devices to produce what is claimed as the most efficient broadband PA design for 4G basestations. The design integrates RFMD's high performance gallium nitride (GaN) amplifiers with Nujira's Coolteq.h envelope tracking power modulators.
"We're getting 55% efficiency," Hendy claimed, "while most others are getting 40% efficiency from a narrow band solution." One RFG1M device, along with a Coolteq.h module, can cover frequencies ranging from 728 to 960MHz, including seven of the LTE frequency bands. Future developments will allow the two companies to cover cellular frequencies from 700MHz to 2.6GHz using only three broadband PAs. This, say the companies, will allow infrastructure vendors to develop highly efficient multimode broadband RF front ends that can meet transmission standards anywhere in the world.
