Murata launches world's first ultra-thin waterproof piezoelectric speaker
Murata has announced what it claims to be the world's first ultra thin waterproof piezoelectric speaker. The VSLBG1914E1400-T0 device is waterproof to IPX5/IPX7 and measures 19.5 x 14.1 x 0.9mm.
According to Murata, its rectangular shape reduces dead space from designs while its dimensions contribute to more freedom in equipment design.
Conventional methods of waterproofing dynamic speakers use waterproof sheets which cover the output sound holes, but can reduce sound quality. Murata's approach incorporates a rubber film into the speaker itself, leaving the output sound holes open. The width of the metal frame housing the speaker has been increased to improve the seal between the metal frame and the chassis and is designed to prevent water penetration.
The new waterproof speaker's sound pressure level is 92.0+/-3.0dB (1500/2000/2500/3000Hz average) with a resonant frequency of 1400Hz+/-20%. Since no magnets are used, Murata says there is no possibility of malfunctions caused by iron sand, or electromagnetic effects on magnetic sensors.
