Wind River and Intel are cooperating to develop optimised multicore solutions for the embedded market. The two companies intend to do this by aligning their R&D, sales and marketing, professional services and engineering resources.

Initial targets include: aerospace and defence; network infrastructure; industrial; medical; and print imaging.
Amongst the items on the agenda will be: optimising VxWorks and Wind River Linux for Embedded Intel architecture processors; optimising Wind River's hypervisor technology for Intel processors, including use of Intel’s virtualisation technology; increased interoperability of development tools for analysis and tuning of multicore devices; and integration of Intel compiler and performance primitives into Wind River multicore software platforms for Intel processors.
Wind River will include the Atom processor in its plans and demonstrated its hypervisor technology running on the Atom Z530 at Embedded World.
* Meanwhile, Markus Levy (pictured), president of the Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium (EEMBC), said the organisation is working on a benchmark to investigate hypervisor performance. Levy noted: “Hypervisors can run on single and multicore devices. We want to measure device performance when more than one operating system is running and there is competition for shared resources.”
