MEMS mic ‘best in class’ says STMicroelectronics

  • MEMS mic ‘best in class’ says STMicroelectronics

STMicroelectronics has announced a high performance, low power digital MEMS microphone that it claims provides a 'best in class' audio experience.

As part of its sensor portfolio, the MP34DT01 is housed in a 3 x 4 x 1mm package and is suitable for mobile phones, tablets and other smart consumer devices.

According to ST, the device employs a patent pending technology that enables the microphone membrane to be placed closer to the acoustic porthole on top of the package. This, says the company, provides a substantial increase in performance and penalty in size. It is the first MEMS microphone on the market that couples a top port sound inlet position with an snr of 63dB and flat frequency response in the full audio band of 20-20,000Hz.

ST says the MP34DT01 outclasses similar devices as the first top port digital MEMS microphone with better acoustic paramaters than existing bottom port mics. The device has been designed for speech recognition systems for voice controlled software and electronic assistant applications used in new consumer devices where improving audio intelligibility is a key factor.

The acoustic sensor technology has been jointly developed with OMRON and is said to be less susceptible to mechanical vibration, temperature variations and electromagnetic interference, while providing high fidelity reproduction of audio signals at low power consumption.
